EU Countries Begin Implementing New Biometric System for External Border Crossing

The European Union is set to upgrade its border security with a new biometric Entry/Exit System (EES) for non-EU citizens. This system, which utilizes facial recognition and fingerprints, will begin a phased rollout starting at Madrid's airport on October 12, 2025.

Key Changes for Travelers

  • Biometric Data Collection: Upon first entry into the Schengen Area, non-EU nationals will have their facial images and fingerprints recorded.
  • Streamlined Future Travel: Subsequent entries will only require a quick facial scan, making the process faster.
  • Digital Records: Traditional passport stamps will be completely replaced by secure electronic entries in a central database.

Implementation Timeline

  1. October 12, 2025: The system goes live at Madrid's airport in Spain.
  2. Phased Implementation: The EES will then be gradually introduced at other air, sea, and land border crossings.
  3. April 10, 2026: The system is expected to be fully operational across all external EU borders.
