Meet Neo: The AI-Powered Humanoid Robot for Your Home

Norwegian startup 1X, backed by OpenAI, has unveiled Neo, a humanoid robot designed to handle everyday household chores. However, as reported by The Wall Street Journal, the robot will initially be supervised by human operators to gather data and refine its performance.

Core Capabilities

  • Versatile Chores: Neo can vacuum, fold laundry, water plants, and open doors for guests. Tasks can be scheduled and managed through a mobile app.
  • Intelligent Interaction: The robot responds to voice commands for on-demand tasks, like fetching a drink or turning off the lights.
  • Adaptive Learning: Powered by a proprietary AI model, Neo features a learning mode that allows it to adapt to new environments and master skills beyond its initial programming.
  • AI Assistant: It includes an AI assistant with a memory function, useful for practicing a new language or receiving reminders about important dates.

Technical Specifications & Privacy

Initially, human operators will periodically connect to the robot's camera to monitor its work and collect training data.

To address privacy concerns, the startup promises that customers can blur faces and establish restricted zones where the camera will be inaccessible to employees.

  • Physical Specs: Weighs 30 kg, can lift up to 70 kg, and carry up to 30 kg. Its soft body is designed for quiet operation.
  • Battery & Connectivity: Runs for up to four hours on a single charge and automatically docks to recharge. It comes equipped with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and 5G.
  • Monitoring: Robot activity can be tracked through the companion app or a VR headset.

Pricing and Availability

1X has opened pre-orders for Neo, offering it for a one-time purchase of $20,000 or a monthly subscription of $500. Deliveries are set to begin in 2026, starting in the U.S. before expanding to other markets. Neo is available in three colors: beige, gray, and dark brown.

1X is a Norwegian robotics startup that has attracted significant investment. The company raised $23.5 million in a round led by OpenAI in April 2023, followed by an additional $100 million in Series B funding in January 2024.
