NASA Posts iPhone 17 Pro Max Photos From Orion Spacecraft Flying to the Moon

On April 2, 2026, NASA successfully launched the Artemis II mission, its first crewed flight to the Moon since 1972. The ten-day journey will take the Orion spacecraft on a flyby of the Moon before returning to Earth. The agency has now released the first stunning images from this historic mission.

iPhones in Space: A New Frontier

This mission marks the first time NASA has supplied every astronaut with an iPhone for photography and video. According to 9to5Mac, the agency chose to independently test and clear the iPhone 17 Pro Max for spaceflight.

  • Apple was not involved in the approval process. NASA conducted its own rigorous safety evaluations, including assessing the risks if a device were to shatter in zero gravity.
  • While the iPhones are a notable addition, the Orion spacecraft is also equipped with four GoPro Hero 11s and two Nikon D5 cameras, which were used for the majority of the photos released so far.
