Elon Musk Launched Grokipedia — an Analogue of Wikipedia

Elon Musk's AI company, xAI, has launched Grokipedia, an AI-driven online encyclopedia positioned as an alternative to Wikipedia. While visually similar to its well-known counterpart, Grokipedia has also been found to borrow content directly from it.

Key Features and User Experience

  • The Grokipedia website is now live, offering over 885,000 articles. For comparison, Wikipedia features over 7 million articles in English alone.
  • The homepage features a minimalist design with only a search bar, which provides suggestions as you type.
  • Unlike Wikipedia, articles on Grokipedia are text-only, lacking images or photographs. Users are also unable to make or suggest edits.

AI-Generated Content and Accuracy Issues

The content is generated by a neural network, believed to be the same model powering the Grok chatbot. However, early reports from publications like the NYT have noted that the site suffers from glitches and contains factual errors.

The Verge reported that while articles claim to be 'fact-checked by Grok,' some content is copied directly from Wikipedia. For example, the articles for the PlayStation 5 are identical on both Grokipedia and Wikipedia.
