X to launch username "marketplace" for social media profiles — without auctions and perpetual ownership

X has officially launched a Handle Marketplace, creating a new platform where users can request and acquire previously registered but inactive usernames. The service is being introduced to help active users secure more desirable handles.

How It Works

  • Eligibility & Cost: The service is rolling out to Premium Businesses Full Access subscribers and will soon be available to all Premium+ subscribers at no additional cost.
  • Acquiring Rare Handles: The most sought-after usernames will be awarded based on an applicant's platform activity, including metrics like reach and posting frequency.
  • Subscription Requirement: Users must maintain an active Premium+ subscription to retain their new handle. If the subscription is canceled, the username will revert to the previous one.
Unlike X's subscription-based model, Telegram’s similar platform, Fragment, operates as a decentralized marketplace.

On Fragment, usernames are traded directly between users as digital assets using the Ton cryptocurrency, with ownership rights secured on a blockchain.
