Release of the MiniOS Flux 5.1 Linux distribution, which runs directly from a USB drive

A release of the MiniOS Flux 5.1 distribution has been announced, which runs directly from a USB drive. The MiniOS Flux solution is a minimalist edition with the Fluxbox window manager, inspired by the Slax distribution. The project uses a modular architecture that allows for creating specialized configurations to adapt the system for specific tasks.

According to OpenNET, the MiniOS Flux solution is available as compact images based on different versions of Debian, supporting amd64 and i386 architectures:

  • Debian 10 Buster (amd64 491 MB, i386 492 MB).
  • Debian 11 Bullseye (amd64 508 MB, i386 510 MB).
  • Debian 12 Bookworm (amd64 589 MB, i386 581 MB).

Key changes and improvements in version 5.1.0:

  • The SYSLINUX menu for BIOS booting has been restored with multilingual support and built-in help documentation in all supported languages (English, German, Spanish, French, Indonesian, Italian, Portuguese, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian). Compatibility issues with older hardware have been resolved;
  • Improved handling of persistent storage:Added support for size units for the 'perchsize' parameter: MB, GB, TB (e.g., 'perchsize=4GB' or 'perchsize=1T')
  • Set a maximum DynFileFS size of 1 TB to prevent excessive disk space allocation;Improved messages when working with persistent storage mode, overlay file system, and version/edition mismatches.
  • Added support for size units for the 'perchsize' parameter: MB, GB, TB (e.g., 'perchsize=4GB' or 'perchsize=1T');
  • Set a maximum DynFileFS size of 1 TB to prevent excessive disk space allocation;
  • Improved messages when working with persistent storage mode, overlay file system, and version/edition mismatches.
  • Restored normal booting in the Ventoy environment by adding necessary symbolic links for compatibility;
  • Optimized conditional loading of fonts in GRUB depending on the lockdown status;
  • Updated user utilities:MiniOS Installer — added support for multilingual SYSLINUX configurations, improved bootloader detection and installation logic, added translations for French and Portuguese (Portugal);MiniOS Tools — improved automatic bootloader type detection in 'sb2iso', added bash autocompletion support for 'dir2sb', 'rmsbdir', 'savechanges', and 'sb2dir';MiniOS Kernel Manager — expanded multilingual support;Flux Tools — added translation support via gettext, integrated Session Manager and Kernel Manager.
  • MiniOS Installer — added support for multilingual SYSLINUX configurations, improved bootloader detection and installation logic, added translations for French and Portuguese (Portugal);
  • MiniOS Tools — improved automatic bootloader type detection in 'sb2iso', added bash autocompletion support for 'dir2sb', 'rmsbdir', 'savechanges', and 'sb2dir';
  • MiniOS Kernel Manager — expanded multilingual support;
  • Flux Tools — added translation support via gettext, integrated Session Manager and Kernel Manager.
  • Improved compatibility of built-in utilities with older versions of bash (requirement lowered to version 4.4).
