On August 21st, the developers of Midjourney launched a comprehensive website for generating images.

Previously, the neural network's features were only accessible through a bot in Discord. With the website launch, the developers also reinstated the trial version, which had been disabled back in March 2023. Now, each user is given 25 free attempts. After that, you will need to either register a new account or purchase a subscription.

Let me explain what has changed for Midjourney users—both for existing users and those trying the neural network for the first time.

What the New Midjourney Website Offers

  1. Detachment from Discord:
Midjourney was launched in 2022, and up until recently, it could only be used via Discord. To do this, users had to register with the service, join a specific server, and send commands in a chat while constantly tagging the Midjourney Bot.This process was somewhat inconvenient: as the neural network evolved, it gained many features, with new commands and capabilities being added. The Discord interface complicated the user experience. Now, you no longer need to manually enter all the settings in the Discord command line and constantly refer to a list of commands. These settings have been transformed into convenient buttons on the website, which no longer overwhelm the request. For example, previously, you had to specify the aspect ratio at the end of a prompt, but now you can simply select the desired option from the available settings.
  2. Restoration of Free Access:
Initially, after the launch of the neural network in 2022, Midjourney developers offered free attempts. This greatly contributed to the service's popularity: users could try it out with minimal limitations. The trial access especially stood out against the backdrop of its main competitor, DALL-E 2, which was in a closed beta testing phase. The trial period was discontinued in 2023, following the release of the fifth generation of Midjourney, where the images became highly realistic. Users began generating images of figures like the Pope and Donald Trump, passing them off as real. As a result, for over a year, Midjourney was only available on a paid basis. Now, free access has been reinstated under the old terms. New users are given 25 free generations, and after that, there's still a way to "earn" additional free attempts, which I'll explain below.
  3. Introduction of Social Features:
The website allows users not only to create their own images but also to interact with those created by others. In the Explore tab, you can view images generated by other users and see the prompts that were used to create them. You can also like your favorite images, and the most popular ones appear on the Top Day page.In the Chat tab, you can see real-time generations from other users. You can click on any image to continue editing it yourself. On the left, there is a chat where users communicate and share tips.By default, you’ll be placed in the Newbies chat for beginners. However, the site also offers various thematic rooms where you can ask for help on specific topics or generate images based on specific themes.
