But he denied everything.
On October 9, 2024, HBO Max released the documentary Electric Money: The Mystery of Bitcoin. The filmmakers had previously promised to reveal the identity of Bitcoin's creator, known under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto.
As a result, the film names Canadian developer Peter Todd as the creator of the cryptocurrency. The filmmakers claimed that in 2010, Todd supposedly continued Satoshi Nakamoto’s post in a discussion of Bitcoin's technical details on the BitcoinTalk forum using his personal profile by mistake. Furthermore, both Todd and Satoshi reportedly used a British-Canadian style of writing in English, according to the documentary.
Peter Todd was also one of the developers of Bitcoin Core, the official Bitcoin software. He implemented the "replace by fee" feature, which was discussed on the BitcoinTalk forum.
A few hours before the film's official release, users began sharing screenshots of it on social media. At that time, Peter Todd denied his involvement in the creation of Bitcoin, stating, "I am not Satoshi." He told Coindesk that director Cullen Hoback was "grasping at straws."
In the film, Todd is also interviewed. When asked about his involvement in the launch of Bitcoin, he responds, "I admit, you're pretty creative. You come up with some crazy theories. It's funny."
Before the film’s release, users on the Polymarket platform were placing bets on who would be revealed as Satoshi Nakamoto. The list of candidates included Bitcoin-related developers and Craig Wright, who once claimed to be the creator but later admitted he had lied. Peter Todd was not on the list.
