Microsoft Opens Access to Its First AI Image Generator MAI-Image-1
Last month, Microsoft announced MAI-Image-1, its first proprietary AI image generator. The tech giant has now made the algorithm publicly available on its Bing Image Creator and Copilot Audio Expressions platforms.

Microsoft's AI chief, Mustafa Suleyman, also revealed that the generator will soon launch in the European Union. He highlighted that the model excels at creating images of food, natural landscapes, artistic lighting, and photorealistic details.
MAI-Image-1 generates photorealistic images, including complex lighting like reflected light and lens flare, as well as detailed landscapes. Its combination of speed and quality, especially compared to larger, slower models, allows users to bring their ideas to life faster, iterate quickly, and then refine their work in other tools.
The MAI-Image-1 algorithm will also be used to generate visuals for AI-powered audio stories on the Copilot Audio Expressions text-to-speech platform.
A Strategic Shift in AI
- Microsoft's first proprietary generative AI models, MAI-Voice-1 (speech) and MAI-1-preview (text), were announced in August.
- The company plans to integrate MAI-1-preview into its Copilot assistant for specific use cases, signaling a move to reduce its dependency on OpenAI models.
- Despite this, Copilot is upgrading to OpenAI's latest GPT-5 model while also offering users the choice of Anthropic's Claude algorithm.
