OpenAI has released the AI agent Codex for programming.
It works autonomously in the cloud and can connect to a user's GitHub account.

- The AI agent is powered by the new codex-1 model — this is a version of the reasoning o3, optimized for development. According to OpenAI, it writes cleaner code and tests it until it works.
- Codex-1 has a context length of 192 thousand tokens and an average level of reasoning.
- The Codex agent works in the cloud, without occupying the user's browser; it can also be launched from a smartphone. The AI assistant can perform multiple tasks simultaneously and connect to repositories on GitHub.
- OpenAI has opened access to the AI agent for Pro, Enterprise, and Team subscribers. Codex will appear in the ChatGPT sidebar and will open in a separate window.
- The company stated that initially there will be no usage restrictions, but in the coming weeks it will introduce limits on Codex's operational speed. After this, a system for purchasing additional credits will be introduced. Access for users on Plus and Edu plans is planned to be provided later.
